Have been needing an instant read thermometer for a long time. I don't cook meat often, so it becomes harder for me to cook when I do. An instant-read thermometer is the best way to properly cook meat without overcooking or undercooking, and at a great price. Advantages - Automatic on/off function. You open the dipstick and it turns on, you close the dipstick and it turns off. Internal magnet. Our stove is right next to our fridge, so the thermometer comes in handy when cooking. Instead of a magnet, you can also use the 4 Velcro points supplied. - LED lights. Makes reading easier in low light conditions (outdoor cooking/barbecue). Battery included! An optional backup battery is also included, which is nice since it's one of those flat watch-style batteries. - Waterproof, can be washed under running water. Cons - battery compartment. What I didn't realize was that the orange round piece of plastic included in the box was the 'coin' you need to use to open the battery compartment. I tried a butter knife and ended up biting into the plastic (see picture). Although it was my fault for not reading the instructions. The battery is difficult to remove with my fingers (I had to pry it open with a flat head screwdriver). However, this is not an issue that affects day-to-day use and is fairly minor. I just got this so can't speak for long term quality but for $10 it's a great option. Level model to start using and stop overcooking meat!
