The instructions for use for this product are very clear. It should be used in conjunction with other training aids such as positive reinforcement when your dog is doing the right things. My dog was very sensitive to noise. I don't think it hurt, but it surprised me and made me uncomfortable. Because I couldn't get his attention when he barked too excitedly at a passing dog, the noise stopped him and made him look at me. At this point I could command him to "quiet" and if he was silent for at least 10 seconds I would give him a good boy and a treat. I rarely had to press the button after the first time.
