Review on KitchenAid KGM Metal Grain Attachment by Ronnie Cole

Good quality product for the price - you need to use it properly.

This grinder is perfect for the person who wants a few pounds of flour a week and already owns a real kitchen helper (commercial/professional. Handyman? Ehhh). I used to use King Arthur's flour for this - something decent enough - and after baking I ground bread from hard red winter wheat? The store sells off completely. I was shocked how much better it got. Bread has a depth and dimension that just didn't exist before. I just can't go back and after I've used everything I have in the store I'll probably never buy flour again. How well does this grinder work? Pretty good for the price I would say - if you already have a real kitchen helper (more on that later). If you need a fine flour and use durum wheat, you need to grind it about 2-3 times. If you want something rougher for rustic bread - 1 or 2 passes. Yes, that's right - you'll need to run it through the mill more than once for most flour. Deal breakers for me? no Do I think it matters to the average person? no Be realistic: you can get a pretty good windmill (all steel construction) for about $100, but it's not perfect. If you need light commercial grinder, pay 2-3 thousand dollars for small commercial grinder. For the typical baking enthusiast who eats maybe 2-3 pounds a week? That is absolutely sufficient. You can run it at speed 10 on a real kitchen gadget and it won't take long. One note - the flour will drift a little. My solution was to put my tall bowl on something so it was directly underneath - easy fix, just put something solid underneath. Okay, I said you need a real kitchen hand for this - I personally have a Pro Line (DC motor). If you have a commercial (AC motor) that's probably fine too. Handyman? Forget it. Buy a hand mill or buy one of the other mechanical mills.
