I have other StarTech products so I decided to try this one. God, that was a bad idea! I love that it has 4 lockable drive bays so I can maximize the number of drives in my computer, but Linux and ZFS found bugs I didn't get when the drives were connected directly to the motherboard. At first I suspected a bad drive and the SMART test said the drives were fine. I switched the rims to another brand anyway and still had problems. I suspected bad cables and replaced them - no bones. I tried using a different SATA port or card - same thing. I finally suspected that this device was the culprit, and I was right. Even worse, the drive claims to run at 6.0 Gb/s, but the drive should slow down to 1.5 Gb/s when plugged into a StarTech rack. It took so long to figure out the real culprit that he walked out of the return window. I'll see if the AMEX return protection helps.
