burns clean with little ash. We use hemp buddha wick with built in cockroach clip. This allows us to set a small amount, light it, use it and let it go out by itself. This scroll will last us for a while and I will update again when it runs out to allow for more accurate timing. I currently estimate 8 months to 1 year. That more than justifies the cost. I have attached some photos. As you can see, the spiral is small, about the size of a votive. You'll also notice that the color is lighter than the photo, but that didn't bother me.
