Berkey filters are very expensive for what you get. They should work as advertised. I finally got them to filter out the red color. They must be primed and installed correctly or they will not filter out red paint. I was very happy that I no longer have to buy mineral water. Well, I'm buying bottled water again. I tested the water with a tester I bought from Revain. It said there was 247 ppm in the water which was about the same as my tap water. I've tried several other types of water. The rain was 11 ppm. Purified and distilled had between 0 and 7 ppm depending on the brand. Spring water was between 80 and 300 ppm, depending on the brand. I know some people say you need minerals in your water but 200+ is ridiculous! The tester said that the ideal drinking water is between 0 and 50 ppm. 0 to 100 is valid. I should have checked that earlier. Now 3 months have passed and I have lost 137.00. I bought another set of Berkey filters from another company with the same results. I wouldn't trust gravity filters. I tested the Katadyn filters, they don't filter anything either. Maybe they pay someone to test them and get great results. This is the tester I used: HM Digital TDS-EZ Water Quality TDS Tester, range 0-9990ppm, resolution 1ppm, reading +/- 3%. accuracy
