Review on SILIVN Adjustable Finger Individual Cutters: Customize Your Cutting Experience by Byron Forman

Don't waste your time

The SILIVN adjustable teeth cutter suffers from extremely poor processing control. It can't do what it's supposed to do and is useless. The others seem to cost much more. It's even cheaper than the unregulated options. I took the bait and tried it. It was an unfortunate decision. I rarely take the time or effort to review it, but this little foray into the purgatory of mail order tools inspired me to take action. Perhaps my cautionary tale will spare you such an experience. If you need details, read on. My first disappointment was preceded by arrival. It was sold out but the seller kindly didn't notify me until after the confirmed arrival window. After another wait, the second disappointment was unpacking. Arrived with minimal protection, in a bubble wrapped envelope. It was covered in the sticky goo often applied to cheaply machined parts to endure months without climate control in an intercontinental shipping container. I figured a quick disassembly and cleaning would get it ready to go. Not so. The distance between the knives is not only determined by the thickness of the knife. The distance is supplemented by a set of washers. The entire assembly consists of more than 40 parts. Groups of three — about a millimeter together, but not the same thickness — are mixed with singles of roughly the same size. It can be assumed that the parts are interchangeable, but the documentation or instructions say nothing about this. Only the utmost care guarantees reinstallation in the delivery condition. My next disappointment followed first use, after which I was disappointed and frustrated with the inaccuracy of the resulting cut. The cavities were much larger than the cutting profiles and did not create a proper bond. It didn't occur to me at first that the bit was the cause of the problem. I assumed user error and set about fixing possible tuning accuracy issues. I turned to all the obvious settings and adjustments of the machine. Problem still exists. I replaced the countertop with a larger one and checked that the surface was level. Problem still exists. I then assumed that the workpiece would vibrate when cutting. I used a copy sled and a clamp next to the cutters. Problem still exists. I was in a final disappointment. After eliminating possible setting errors, I checked the bore path. I placed the cut piece against the fence and looked at the path of the router at the entry point, rotating the bit by hand to see the gap. The wings of each boat were clearly not in the same plane and not the same distance from the center. A photo of the deviation is attached which clearly shows both vertical and horizontal deviation as well as the difference between different incisors. In short, it's junk. Don't buy this! Find another solution or spend money on a properly machined tool.

Pros
  • The strength of a precisely cut joint and the maximum bond area create a joint that is actually stronger than a bare piece of wood.
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
