3.5 months UPDATE: still works!

3.5 month update: Back to 5 stars! The problem with charging only arose for 48 hours, and nothing happened on this connector. 3 month update: Recently my HP Thunderbolt USB C Fan Dock turned on and when I first heard about it I was confused because I didn't know it had a fan :o It didn't cause any problems but this did and a laptop battery issue indicate a problem with the adapter - degradation, debris, right? How I found out: One day my laptop battery was at 10% and it wouldn't charge. I fixed my battery by discharging it with a diagnostic test and then plugging in the original AC adapter and letting the HP laptop calibrate the battery. This revived the battery. I ran the HP AC adapter test and it failed when I used the USB-C adapter. When I removed the adapter and just plugged the Thunderbolt dock directly into the USB-C port, it passed the test . Although there is a problem, I STILL USE the adapter because it is EXTREMELY USEFUL! I'll let you know if this causes more problems. First review: I took a chance and bought it when there were only 5 reviews and it has worked well so far! First, I think USB-C is a terrible connector on a laptop - charging the interface for a docking station is only possible when your laptop is in the stationary state. As soon as you move your laptop, you will see a curve in the interface. and that can be worrying! As a consumer electronics designer, this connector combined with the robust cables makes me **cringe**. The only way to mitigate this is to use a magnetic connector. I'm writing this review using my laptop connected to gigabit ethernet and a 1920x1080 display. Power and ground are in the right place to keep my laptop from exploding. when I plugged it in, phew! - Ethernet comparison shows they are almost the same: 938 Mbit/s with adapter, 940 Mbit/s without, yes! - HD videos played from YouTube work fine. The plug gets hot because it contains electronics. I would love to take it apart and see what's inside! :)

Pros
  • USB to USB adapter
Cons
  • not reliable
