A friend started our own butterfly garden a few years ago and this cage is perfect for watching a caterpillar transform into a pupa and then a butterfly. It is large enough for cuttings of milkweed, dill, and other caterpillar hosts, as well as branches for caterpillars to attach their pupae to. (Although 90% of our caterpillars preferred to make their pupae on the trellis itself rather than on the branches we placed.) It's also easy to clean. This fall we raised about 50 caterpillars in this cage (about 5-15 at a time) which required daily cleaning which took about 5-10 minutes. We put paper towels on the floor to throw away and replace, and a wet washcloth easily cleans any remaining screenprinted caps. The cage is also very light and it was easy for my girls to take it to and from school for science classes.
