Canon 850IS in Photo & Photo

I've had this camera for four months now and I'm very satisfied. I used to have a Sony W5 which was a great camera, fast (point and shoot) and ran on AA batteries. I then bought a Nikon L5 and was very disappointed in its ability to focus quickly in low light and very slow shot-to-shot times. I used the 850's predecessor, the 700, and was impressed with the speed of most functions compared to the Sony and Nikon. I was wary of proprietary batteries, so I bought an extra battery when I bought the camera and haven't needed it yet when shooting. It's a good idea to have an extra power supply anyway. If you start with a freshly charged battery, you probably won't need it. The picture quality is excellent, there are many modes available, but in most cases the automatic mode works well. I love being able to record videos with such a compact camera. I have a miniDV camcorder, but I almost never carry it because of the extra weight. With this camera I can handle most of the situations where I want to capture my two and a half year old son. Manual modes are limited compared to the SLR, but this camera can move discreetly anytime, anywhere. If you are looking for a portable digital camera then this is not for you. If you are looking for a camera that you always have with you to capture spontaneous moments, this is the camera for you. Image stabilization definitely helps, but don't expect every picture to be perfectly sharp.

Pros
  • Not cheap, but decent
Cons
