Hair algae in most aquariums are caused by phosphate leaching from rock and sand or unfiltered city water. PhosBan is a very good product to get rid of phosphate and stop algae growth. This can take several months as rocks and sand take time to shed their last phosphate. On average about 3 months, and if you are feeling really bad, for example a measurably higher amount of hair algae. absorbed---you may need to change the fosban every few weeks. Note: It works best not in the supplied bag (which is designed for very small aquariums) but in the PhosBan Reactor, a simple device that inverts the medium and allows for full water circulation. The reactor is sold by the same people.
