Review on πŸ“· Sony Alpha 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS Super-Telephoto APS-C Lens: Exploring Ultimate Zoom and Image Quality by Erick Hernandez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A good compact travel TV but not the best choice for professional quality.

This lens fills a gap in Sony's APS-C lens lineup, and it does it pretty well. After a few weeks of frequent use before the return deadline in January, I had an issue with how badly I needed to fill that gap and whether I was better off spending that money on 200-600 or 100-400 and just the latest model A7R. . Many of my problems are not related to the lens, but to the Sony APS-C body. What I like: Very light for the focal length Compact size goes well with my A6500 and A6000 Very good sharpness Seems well made Autofocus is fast enough What I don't like: A6500/6000 don't pair well with long focal length lenses. You need a grip to hold any extreme telephoto lens stable enough. The controls on Sony's harvesting bodies lack a front steering wheel, making them difficult to change on the fly. Results are fairly sharp but lack the clicking 100-400 or 200-600 at 18MP APS-C on the A7RIII. Autofocus is more than acceptable, but it lacks the speed of its larger siblings I've rented. The maximum aperture F/6.3 is slow for a length of 350mm. It also does not dazzle with such FL and aperture. F/8 is the true minimum. The teleconverter is not available. There is no focus limit switch. For bird watching at least 350mm. Cropping exacerbates sharpness and high ISO problems due to the slow aperture. If I travel light this is an amazing option with compact suitcases. This lens, combined with the Zeiss 16-70/F4, covers everything you need (perhaps with a couple of indoor Sigma Prime lenses) and all fits in a small pocket or fanny pack. The question is whether a person travels light often enough to need this compact kit. In my ideal world, Sony would make a compact 300mm/F4 prime lens and converter like Pentax and Nikon, and their crop cameras would have front dials and no AA filters. Life isn't perfect.

Pros
  • Nice Touch
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Can the Sony 70-350 compete with Sony 100-400 at 40% the cost?
