I felt like about thirty minutes could be cut out of this movie. In the beginning, the scene where David says goodbye to his parents is too long and the mother's melodramatic acting collides with everyone else's fine acting. The scene in Paris where Mary tries to get Jack's attention while he's drunk takes too long. My guess is that since Clara Bow was a box office scam and didn't think she had enough work, from what I've read this scene was staged to give her a chance to look glamorous in a sequin dress and a provocative one Having a moment getting dressed behind a screen. All of this was too long and unnecessary. While the fight scenes were amazing, I waited for something to advance the story rather than giving us a near-detailed account of every step of the fight. It would be more suitable for a documentary about these battles. The real essence of the film is the friendship between David and Jack. In the end, when David dies, he says that he never cared about the mix-up of Sylvia's photo and note, or which woman wanted which man. He only cared about Jack. This makes sense because we never feel that a relationship is brewing between two women and men, and we don't care. Both women are only minor characters in this story, although Mary gets a lot more screen time because she takes part in military operations. As the men held each other as David died, I said to myself, 'Oh my God! Looks like they're about to kiss." And then Jack kisses David. Of course, David doesn't return the kiss, but just stands motionless. As they both said the only thing they ever cared about was each other I was very touched. Also the scene where Jack goes back to David's mother and delivers the teddy bear was very touching. Both actors Richard Arlen and Charles Rogers were great throughout the film. When I saw David on a German plane flying to his buddies, I was like, "He's going to get shot." It's never good for a character to do something intentionally stupid, as it reduces the credibility of the story. David also had to understand that he was presumed dead , so no one would suspect he was piloting a plane.Interested in Mary despite Mary's ongoing crush.What really worked for me was how David and Jack got into the military, trained and did their first flights ten. And then the way they started looking out for each other, especially in battle, and their final scene together, which I don't find melodramatic or mundane at all. It was unforgettable. This is a real opportunity to grab some popcorn and bring your napkin saga to life. If the story had been better framed and faster, I think it really would have been the best movie overall, despite the fight scenes. I also just watched 7th Heaven which came out the same year and was nominated for Best Picture. It was a much better film, winning awards for writing, directing and acting. So it seems that the best picture award was given for technical achievement in Wings.
