Review on Merkur Chrome Safety Razor 39C for Enhanced SEO by Krystal Rice

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great heavy razor

This is a quality DE razor. This is a bevel razor from Merkur, very well made and quite heavy (I have used many different DE razors and this is by far the heaviest). I've read online reviews that seemed to indicate that this is an aggressive razor, i.e. one that can be downright unforgiving. In my experience, however, this is not the case at all. It is very effective at shaving and in the two weeks of shaving I barely cut myself once or twice. So far I've used two brands of blades: Merkur, which came with the razor, and the blue (American-made) Personna. Both work well, but I prefer the Personnas a bit - the blade choice is pretty personal, so YMMV. It is best to let the razor glide under its own weight and not press on it. I have found that three strokes (along, across and against the grain) in small strokes produce a very close (BBS) shave. One thing I also noticed is that it's not a good idea to be too aggressive with the ATG strokes - there seems to be a bit of a burn after shaving. A light hand seems to work very well - holding the blade around the balance point is good for that. The handle of the razor is very easy to grip and there is hardly any risk of slipping, even with wet or soapy fingers. Loading the blade is a bit more difficult than butterfly razors, but not really a problem. The tilt head bends the blade quite a bit in a spiral path and also changes the exposure of the blade from end to end. I don't know if tilt matters as I haven't used Merkur Razors, but at the same time I haven't encountered any problems with tilt itself. Overall I am very happy with the purchase. I bought a "trial set" of razor blades to see what works best with the 39c. More on that later Update 7/22/2017 Some additional feedback based on a few weeks of use. I am very pleased with this shaver. The biggest benefit is that it works very well with almost every blade I've tried. I very rarely cut or cut myself, although I'm not very careful when shaving. I'm quite confused by the reviews which seem to indicate this is an aggressive razor; While it may not be as "soft" as a spring razor, I don't think it's aggressive at all. Instead, it's extremely efficient, delivering a super close (almost BBS) shave in just two passes - one in the grain and one against/cross the grain. Here is a quick overview of how it works in combination with different blades: Merkur blade included with the razor: good performance. No cuts or irritation. However, having tried other blades, this doesn't seem like the best option.. - Personna Blue: This blade works great with Feder, but somehow doesn't work well with 39c. Performance was acceptable, but I had to do a lot more work to get a close shave - the blade felt a bit "dull" compared to others. I need to take a closer look. - Wilkinson Sword: Outstanding Achievement. I'll rate this blade #2 for how well it performs in 39C - Dorco ST-301: Almost as good as Wilkinson. I felt it was a little less smooth and lost sharpness a little quicker than Wilkinson.- Feather: Not a bad performance. It's a bit aggressive with 39c in my opinion. I got a cut over a bumpy spot on my face despite being careful. Others report that the Feathers work very well in the 39c - for me they were on par with the Personna Blue in preference. - Astra SP: Outstanding performance. I was blown away by how well it worked with the 39c. I have never had a better shave with the DE razor/blade combo than with the Astra and 39c. Two passes are enough for me to get an absolutely smooth shave without irritation. This is definitely my top choice for a razor at the moment. The blade is made in Russia (Gillette); A small downside is that there are a few dots of glue on the blade to attach the sheath to the blade. The blade does not wear out easily at all. I'm sure it has no effect, but it's a bit annoying. Update 08/04/2017 Just thought I'd add a quick update. As a test, I took the blade that worked best on the 39c, the Astra SP, and swapped it out for my old Feather razor to see how well the Feather compares to the 39c. Wow, what's the difference - the shaving experience with Feather was nowhere near as comfortable as with Merkur. The weight of the razor and, in my opinion, the angle of the head makes a big difference when it comes to getting a closer shave with fewer passes. With the Feather, I had to do another pass to get the same close shave as the 39c. Also, it wasn't as smooth as the 39c and was also less effective at removing stubble. When I switched the blade back to 39c I was convinced that the razor made a difference as the shaving experience was much better with the same blade in 39c. I also reduced my program to 2 passes, 1 WTG and 1 ATG, with some minor adjustments in hard-to-reach areas. So goodbye 39c with the Astra SP FTW!
