Read the guide! suitable for accessories and consumables

After ten years of recording on my DVD burner, it suddenly stopped reading the Philips DVD-R discs I always used. I decided my voice recorder was dead completely, so I started looking for a replacement. Little did I know that the DVD recorder I bought years ago for $165 now costs about $400-$500 brand new if you can find it. I suspect it has something to do with copyright. I looked on Craigslist and found one new for $150. Different brand, exactly the same car. I had a Magnavox and its replacement is Funai. This is not surprising as I believe they are all made by the same company under different brand names. Luckily for me, this unit came with all the manuals and whatnot, and contrary to tradition, I actually read the instructions for a change. To my surprise, the media brand recommended for the Funai DVD burner was listed. There were several of these, but Maxell DVD-r was easily accessible to me. Out of curiosity, I tried burning to an old, trustworthy Phillips DVD-R and Funai wouldn't read it. Hmmm. I tried Maxell DVD-r and Low and Lo and lo and behold it worked great. I thought what about my old car? Will Maxell Media work on it? The answer is yes. So now I have two machines that work well with Maxell media. My advice: READ your instructions. I don't understand why my old typewriter suddenly stopped reading Philips media. Maybe Phillips changed something in their drives to prevent writing to a writable disc? It makes no sense. Now I only buy Maxell for my recorders and still use Phillips for my high speed copiers which work great.
