Review on πŸ“Έ Sigma DP-1 Merrill Digital Camera: 46MP FOVEON X3 Sensor & 19mm f/2.8 Lens by Vedavyas Fleming

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great camera for focused work, less good for photography or action

Great camera for my needs beyond artistic photography:1. Compact, solid build quality 2. very high image quality (on par with MF film)3. Profitability Cons: 1. Clumsy operating system and very slow image processing (30 seconds per image, 8 image buffers).2. Main lens, non-removable (silver lining: never dust problem).3. poor low light performance/high ASA, poor low light autofocus.4. a very strange highlight pattern that I might try to turn into something artistic. bad battery life. Figure 2 hours per battery. There is a matching Ricoh battery, so please buy it separately.6. There is absolutely NO POSSIBILITY for remote triggering (big issue for me as I shoot in stereo). Alright.7. Failed to set/sync external flash. with a camera. No sync. Socket for cable.8. Some issues with digital patterns on dark images. God with so many flaws, why am I giving five stars? Image quality and camera price. Any other camera with this image quality costs three to five times and twice as much. All other variants with this image quality come with a full-frame Bayer sensor. Sigma uses an APS-C sized Foveon sensor that captures as many images, if not more, in a smaller package. Nice color and tone (in good light or low ASA). This camera will be carried around, so it's more likely to capture the images you find. I don't want to carry around a full frame DSLR let alone pay for it! And despite the flaws, it still shoots faster than my companion!

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • poorly thought out

In the right conditions (ISO=100-200 and on a bright day), the photos are SUPERB!!!. Love it.
