Much better than expected

This speaker is much better than I expected. I've only heard a few small Bluetooth speakers and found them to sound weak and tinny. However, the Sony SRSX3 delivers amazing sound. I understand why professional reviews compare it to the Bose Mini. I have Bose Companion 2 bookshelf speakers, the sound is comparable. I didn't go to the store and compare the speakers before buying, but it's a good idea. I've read countless reviews of all the popular (and not so popular) speakers. There are some great YouTube reviews comparing the speakers. I stayed within my budget and am very happy with this purchase. I bought one used which is in like new condition at a significant discount over new. Sound. As per other reviews, it works great at around half the volume, which fills the room with lots of volume. There is no way of knowing how loud the audio is set. They have buttons that move up and down, but no display to gauge how loud it really is. It definitely gets louder than it needs to be. I don't use it for parties. Other reviewers are looking for a speaker loud enough for a beach party. That's not my goal, but I think it will work in the backyard. The bass is quite present, especially when using the equalizer on my phone's music player. I often boost the bass and treble for a fuller sound. The sound comes out of the speaker at the front and back. When buying a speaker, the most important thing to me was sound quality, not battery, size, or features (I was tempted by the Creative Roar for some cool features). I also use the speaker to sleep with the White Noise app on my phone. This makes the crickets sound quite authentic. Sony did not disappoint me. Assembly. The speaker is very well made. I didn't try to compare others. I like the simple, clean design with the style of the buttons being sub-surface at the top of the speaker. Each button has a small LED that lights up when pressed. These are small lights that are easy to see but aren't too bright in the dark to disturb your sleep because they're on top and don't shine in your direction. The charging indicator only lights up when charging, not when plugged in. It turns off when fully charged. The speaker has a certain weight. There are rubber feet on the bottom and it won't move around the table due to vibration. Sony advocates it, but for $20 I just wrap it in a t-shirt in my bag. Particularities. I usually use the "Sound" button, which creates a "surround sound" effect. In fact, sometimes it's hard to tell where a sound is coming from in a room because the room is well filled with sounds. The speakerphone works well but I don't really need it. I tried this and it works fine and sounds clear. There are also two volume buttons (up and down) on the top. I see this as an overall plus as it offers even more volume control as I also control the volume from my phone. It's like having two independent volume controls. So you set the main range on the speaker yourself and you can fine-tune that range from your phone if that makes sense. There is a Bluetooth connection button on the top. It was very easy to pair with my phone and often times it will automatically connect when it's on and my phone is within range with the Bluetooth on. If you've never connected anything to your phone, all you have to do is turn the device on and press the Bluetooth button. Then turn on Bluetooth on your phone, search for devices and select Sony SRSX3. It is so easy. It has an audio-in jack that allows you to use a standard 3.5mm wired connection if you don't have Bluetooth. At the top there is a button to select the connection mode. There's even a small reset hole on the back if you need it. I'm not sure when you'll do it, but it's there. battery and performance. I use it in battery and mains operation. The power plug is in the back corner next to the audio input jack. The battery is designed for 7 hours. How long it takes depends on how loud it is. By playing gently, the battery lasts more than 7 hours. I've yet to use it on battery long enough to test how long it lasts, but I trust professional reviews on this one. I just love how portable this thing is. You just want to take it with you everywhere because it sounds so good and it's so small. I like that it uses a standard micro USB charger like most phones do (sorry Apple you lost on this one). It comes with a USB wall jack and a fairly short cable (about 2 feet). This can work if you're near an outlet or just using it from a laptop, but you can buy a standard micro-USB wall charger with a longer cable. It turns itself off after a while of inactivity, so I don't have to turn it off even when it's online.
