Best solution after many attempts.
Overall this fixed some issues I had trying to use the hidden hardware. I use TimberTech pen sleeves and the hidden pin style just doesn't stay in place and only the crease in the pen sleeve accommodates all the threads available on other hardware leaving no room for adjustment and just a constant struggle with it. I bought these for the stairs as they were intended to further frustrate the existing hardware I was using, so I decided to just surface mount them. The installation was easy and went without any problems. The number of settings was way more than I need - I want to use them from the start.
