That's it - plastic.
I bought this umbrella to make a Halloween jellyfish costume with LED lights and ribbons. After Halloween I removed all my stuff and my kids use it as an umbrella. This is normal for a cheap umbrella - it's plastic with thin metal teeth. However, I wouldn't trust that on a heavy torrential day or in strong winds. I'm even afraid of opening it too quickly and have to be very careful to close it well so as not to crumple the plastic.
