Our house is small, so we needed a small scratching post. The footprint is small enough to fit on a narrow table behind a sofa. The table makes the tree tall enough for the cat to feel "big and in charge," and also serves as a walkway for the kitty to walk to my husband's chair. Wood seems good value for money. It won't be indestructible, but it's not ugly and it suits our space. For now we've stabilized it with a wedge, but ultimately we'll screw it to the countertop (cheap DIY, no valuable antiques). Our next task is to get the cat to use it. Another reason we didn't want to spend a lot. We know what cats are.
