It has a long wire attached to the probe so you can leave the probe in the meat and position the thermometer block outside. It has an on/off switch on the back, as well as a switch for C and F. You turn it on and choose the meat and doneness. The desired temperature and the current temperature of the food are displayed. It lights up so you can read it easily. I gave 4 stars because the display just doesn't want to change for me when I press meat or temperature very lightly.
