Everyone in my family loves this running pup with a wagging tail! I bought a Hape Walk-a-long Puppy for my 1 year old son's birthday thinking his two older sisters wouldn't want to play with this "toddler toy". I usually like to buy versatile toys that grow well and that all three children like. I also try to stay away from battery powered toys because there are many reasons - endless $$$, inevitable drama when batteries die, annoying accidents, acid corrosion of batteries, can't leave them outside when it's raining, no bathing. usually play etc. I still think my little one might not enjoy it much, it looked darn cute, my husband agreed (he is very anti-squeaky/noisy toy) and my kids are always trying to pull something long after them - Rolling luggage, long ribbons, each other. should have known I was so wrong! My now 23 month old, 3 and 5 year olds all *um* "take turns" almost every day for a year now and go for walks around the house and on the street with this sweet and happy chap. (The pup is wooden and probably not intended for outdoor play, just a side note.) This is a simple, cute, well-designed classic wooden toy that seems to never grow old. My grandmother probably had one of these toys during the horse-drawn carriage days. Of course, her father probably carved her toys himself from scrap wood and hay rope that was strewn about the yard, which might have taken weeks to complete. Sounds like a lot of work. The old days must have been so hard without Revain Prime. Anyway, it's a wooden Hape toy, so it's pretty well made, not patchy at all, and only took 2 days to get to our house. with Revain Prime. It's freaking awesome! It arrived well packaged, hidden in an open box that was easy to open. This way, if you gift this to your child, they can grab it right out of the box, although they may need a little help to get their new pup out completely. Parents need to help those with thinner and less dexterous hands, so be prepared with your swiss army knife, handyman, machete or whatever. The wooden parts are a bit shiny and quite nicely painted with orange spots and orange ears. Light, natural wood shows through well where it's not orange, so it's not an eyesore at all. The red train is thin rope, not too long but not too short in my opinion. My 5 year old is very tall for his age and manages to walk the Hape pup easily without having to crouch to make him roll on the floor. Just as fun and maybe played with more than my kids' various robotic pets. Understand yourself. The best part is that it doesn't require batteries, but it still moves like a puppet on a string, only the whole house is a stage. You can sit him down to "beg for a treat," lay him on his back to "play dead," have him nod his head up and down while he "drinks from his dog bowl." Also, its tail wags when pulled, which is my favorite feature. I will definitely be buying more Hape toys this Christmas and/or for my January Bibi's second birthday. Then I think of a crocodile and a duck with dangling legs.
