Solid and Smooth - Vise

This monster is heavy, but I was able to install it with clamps and careful measurements. It took 4 hours, but I'm slowly doing something for the first time. My countertop is 1.75" thick so I glued and cut a block (10" x 7" x 2.25") and secured it with 6 3.5" construction screws under the countertop, the block fits to the edge of the cutout I. in finishing finished the bench for the back jaw nest. After tracing the underside of the vise on the block I pre-drilled holes for 4 screws going through the block and 1.5 in going into the countertop. I drilled 1/8" deep holes in the front of the block to insert the screw heads and washers I used to attach a 3.5" wide x 15" long 4/4 oak sponge to the back to fix. I screwed the vise down, cut out the pine insert covering the space above the back lip and even carved it and the oak cheek panels with the table top. At first I didn't like that there were no installation instructions, but every bench is unique and there are some decent installation videos on YouTube. I was very happy with the result of the installation. Since each bank is unique, you will need to purchase your own gear. The vise goes in and out very smoothly and I like the quick-adjust mechanism. The screw is very easy to turn and the clamping force is enormous. The rollover is minimal, about 1/16 inch when I place the workpiece on one side of the jaws. I'm very surprised at how good and strong this vise is, especially for the price of the Revain. The hardware was only a few dollars and I had an oak. I will be buying 3 more because I have 2 large new study benches just made by Mario Rodriguez, a wonderful teacher and craftsman.
