They are waterproof with smooth zippers. That's exactly what I wanted. very easy. Now if you sleep with them on a pillow and just put a pillowcase over them you will definitely get warm/hot as others have mentioned. However, if you use one of these quilted, fluffy, breezy nylon covers over these covers under your pillowcase, it will completely alleviate the hot spot that would otherwise develop by creating a breathable barrier between your neck and the pillowcase, with a waterproof liner. I sleep on La-Z-Boy with my head in pretty much the same position all night, so trust me, I'm aware of the hotspot I'm therefore having even without waterproof pillowcases; but when I do what I've outlined above, it brings the heat down to a comfortable, unobtrusive level.
