It is better to wash the old filter.
The original filter on my Dirt Devil says it can be washed/washed but after a while it just starts to smell like a musty vacuum no matter how many times it's washed. I've had my vacuum for a year and it was a good, simple replacement at an affordable price that got rid of any vacuum smell I had.
