Like many other reviewers, I tested them for flavor and potency in a non-emergency situation. Rather than refusing food, I tried eating lighter than usual to see how much it could compensate for the taste. To me, they taste very similar to pop tarts, maybe a little worse. But overall sweet and enjoyable. Obviously there is an appetite suppressant effect here, but you can get it with all sorts of other pills. Bioavailable vitamins and minerals are good and certainly welcome in a food-scarce environment. The problem was that while I wasn't feeling overly "hungry" after a few hours of testing, I did develop other symptoms of obvious hunger such as weakness, mild dizziness, mild headaches, and the like. All of this soon subsided after I ate some real food. I ended up cutting a few hundred calories throughout the day and still feel great, but it's hard to eat 12 of those and nothing else. Without other food I would still feel terrible after twelve o'clock. I think a lot of these survival products get away with too much because they use the magic word "emergency". In an emergency, you are not picky and do not need perfection. I recognize that foods are valuable that are light, nutritious, and have a long shelf life. But if I had this and nothing else, I would have to eat a lot more than once an hour. Where I see the best value is in non-emergency situations where real food isn't always available and you'd otherwise resort to snacking. Instead of eating a candy bar, just eat one or two and it will take the edge off. It's a lot cheaper than buying it from a vending machine.
