UPDATE: Tor has been used daily since purchase. We haven't had this for a long time (several months?) and the latch no longer closes automatically every time. So if you don't push the lever back manually, all you have to do is lift the gate to "unlatch" it. Luckily my little one is still too small to understand it, but it definitely won't keep him off the stairs for much longer. This will work great for pets or those not trying to figure out how to get by, but I know I'll have to come up with another solution soon. Super disappointing. (Photo attached) Initial review: I've seen other reviews complaining about how you have to install this gate, but I went with it anyway because I'm the "handier" guy and thought it was worth it worth it for the quality and price. At first I thought the gate was oddly heavy (not too heavy to lift by any means, but I'm not sure why it has to be that heavy). I think I would be a little uncomfortable not incorporating it in a hairpin. Second, I'd like this company to provide a stick that can be attached to the wall so you don't have to use their folded paper guide to determine where you're going to attach it (you'll need to make sure that paper is aligned - obvious, but with flex folded paper it's a bit tricky - it doesn't take shaping into account and you have to mark and cut the pieces and glue them to the same height on both sides (whatever. It was annoying) All the time I have I took a look I thought there was a MUCH easier way to install this gate but the company probably wanted to save some money I'm happy with the looks and the function (As you can see it sits between ours Living room and entrance/staircase so it's very important that this area is open plan when not in use) I would do it again, at least t without checking other options. To be honest, I spent an extra $30 on a gate for the top of our stairs that was a lot easier to install and a lot 'harder' to open and close for my unborn baby's hands to figure out. I probably would have bought two of these if I had known all this beforehand, but I really didn't need both at the same time. For the price, and if you're willing to put in the headache of a few hours to install the damn thing, go for it!
