Review on DIY Candle Making Kit Fragrance by Gelin Battle

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Family fun for the price of a few movie tickets.

Movie tickets are about $20 a ticket and we were looking for a fun and clever way to spend the weekend together. Candle making seemed like a good way to do this. We did a little research and found that this set contains candles made from a blend of coconut and soy. Soy wax is one of the cleanest burning waxes and coconut wax is one of the longest burning waxes. Both are good alternatives to the paraffin wax found in most commercial candles. The more you read about paraffin wax, the more you'll appreciate the wax they're made from. The end product is a bit expensive for what you get. each small candle costs about 7-10 dollars. But the most interesting thing is making them. This can be done by one person, but together the project progresses faster. The hardest part is submerging the light pot with the candle in a large pot of boiling water. You will need an oven mitt and tongs. We had an accident where the tongs slipped off and we lost a pot of wax which was a shame. The candles themselves are fine. We don't know why but on 2 out of 3 candles we made (there are 4 candles in the set but 1 spilled during the cooking phase) the wick area collapsed leaving a hole next to the wick. This fills the hole with wax, leaving only a small, light blue flame to burn. It melts the wax and releases some fragrance, but it's not as attractive as a real flame and needs to be relighted often. We followed the directions and made sure the wax was heated to 185 degrees F before pouring. In terms of scent, it looks like most of these sets have the same scents. Jasmine, Coconut Lime, etc. The essential oils smell cheap and synthetic, but I guess for the price that's to be expected in a kit. I used the high quality lavender and patchouli essential oils I needed to make for my candle. You can do some research and buy a few different better quality oils before making candles. All in all it was a fun project for the price. We enjoyed the process. Obviously these ingredients will not make a quality Dyptique candle, but for a beginner this was a good way to see how easy candle making can be. This is a fun family evening that includes pretty much everything you need to start making little candles.
