I've been using spikes for quite some time. These things are amazing. For every 4/5 you bend, bend one. But they are sharp and once strong, like balls. I've also used them around the inside of the frame and they add pressure to the substrate, pattern and glass in a really positive way. Easy to use anywhere. I hammer them in with the blunt end of an old flat chisel and a hammer. To get! You will not regret it. The cost is much better and they don't go as easily as the thorns. Overall I see many more uses, and there are about 100 in a pack.
