Design and Function - Games and Accessories

I'm not a big backgammon player but I understand the value of these portable games. They are very convenient when travelling, camping, at the beach or even when spending a few hours in a cafe or pub. They are also convenient for home use as they don't take up much space. With that in mind I thought it would be a good idea to add this travel backgammon set to my portable chess set, some cards, my travel set and mahjong. With that in mind, I was very pleased (and a bit surprised) with the quality of the materials and construction of this set. Pros: * The board is made of real leather and is thicker than expected (about 2mm or 1/16 inch). * The playing surface is pleasantly grainy yet soft, while the underside is rough to keep it in place * The set folds into an easily portable size and is surprisingly light considering all the components * The figures, dice and doubling cube are all solid and Polished Poor: * The pieces are quite small - less than a nickel in diameter (see photo). Okay, that's not too bad, but I think they could have been made a bit bigger without sacrificing playability.* When unfolded, the free edge curls up a bit. Again, this isn't necessarily a bad thing (and it doesn't bother me too much), but it's worth noting. Ugliness: * Design. If you look closely, you'll see that the dots on this set (the long triangles used to move the pieces around) are just white and black stitching to mark the space, and no actual colored pieces to point to board are sewn or pinned. In terms of gameplay, I really have to say that this set is great. It's small, but not too small, and the leather and looks definitely set it apart from typical briefcase sets. Which is actually pretty cool, and from a design point of view it's awesome. In fact, the white dots look incredible. The problem is that the other points for the black stones are marked with a black line. On black skin. Meaning . Well, see for yourself. It seems that the manufacturer would at least use a colored thread that contrasts with the background, right? How grey? Spring . guess again The functional result is that it can be quite difficult to see the black dots when deployed. In the photo I increased the contrast to emphasize the black line. Oh, everyone knows where he is, so it doesn't affect the game much. But it is precisely this lack of attention to detail โ€“ or succumbing to the whims of the designer โ€“ that separates the great from the really good. And this set is really good. If this was judged on the design aspect alone it would be great and would get 5 stars. But from a practical point of view, it never gets beyond really good. But then again, it's not bad.
