Buyers Beware: Scammers know that Kinect owners need an adapter for new Xboxs, and adapters are in demand since Microsoft made the embarrassing decision to extend the Kinect port to all Xboxes set. The worst of the fake adapters pictured here have no electronics inside at all. They are just passive bandwidth adapters. The scam is clever, but unfortunately, due to the length of the cables involved, there's no chance these pass-through adapters will work properly. A real Kinect adapter has a USB hub inside that can act as a range extender. I ordered my counterfeit Microsoft Kinect v2 adapter new from Buy Top Tech; I don't necessarily blame the seller as it's entirely possible they were scammed as well. To be honest, if you don't know what a Kinect adapter is supposed to look like, this scam is hard to spot. The Kinect adapter and power adapter are BOTH Microsoft, just like the original, and the plastic is pretty good. The Kinect adapter chassis is even held together with ultrasonic welding, so there are no screws on it. I was suspicious at first when I saw that the product label had oil stains and what appeared to be lint all around it. Although the Kinect adapter had a crooked Microsoft product label, it didn't have a serial number. I tried connecting this thing to my Xbox with a Kinect sensor and basically nothing happened. I tried connecting it to my computer and saw it connecting and disconnecting repeatedly; The USB debug tool reported a USB enumeration error indicating a serious signal integrity issue. (Having taken it apart I'm not surprised.) Since I bought this thing in November I decided to put it under the knife and found that there were NO ACTIVE ELECTRONICS INSIDE. There's a metal weight plate, a couple of connectors, and a ridiculously bad circuit board with a couple of capacitors and a dual-color LED. It was quite a complex scam and I lost $80. How to protect yourself: 1) Remember that the real Kinect and Kinect adapter were discontinued in November 2017. It should be quite difficult to find a "new" at this point. 1.2) My fake Kinect adapter was marked model 1637. The real Model 1637 has an LED between the power plug and the USB connector plug on the SHORT SIDER of the adapter. The fake USB port and power plug are on the long side, and the LED is not in the middle. 3) The counterfeit adapter LED will turn green when there is USB power but the power plug is not connected. The actual Kinect adapter LED should never be green. It's either ORANGE or WHITE. 4) The genuine Microsoft Kinect adapter has a square design language that carries over to the power adapter and included cables. The power supply unit is square, as are the cables. 5) Not that I'm necessarily vindicating it, but if you're comfortable disassembling and soldering things, it's actually possible to modify the Kinect sensor so that you don't need it.
