Conceptually the mat works but there are other issues and I don't recommend it. Tray Cons: 1) It comes folded/crumpled in the package, resulting in the hexagonal portion of the mat never lying flat on the base. Of course, you can put a heavy tray on it to keep it down, but then waste some of the mat to catch the filler under the tray, it would be better to roll it up. 2) My cat seems to have slightly torn the hexagonal foam (see photo), this is a major concern for the mat's durability and my cat's safety.
