The cable is too short and permanently connected. I got by without the extension, but you might be out of luck. Blu-ray playback was very choppy on an i3 machine with 16 gigabytes of RAM. It works fine on an i7 machine with 32 gigabytes of RAM. On both machines I had to use both cables that came with the drive to play the Blu-Ray, which is cumbersome but doesn't bother me. I sent my comment to the seller and immediately received a response with helpful advice. Not being able to play Blu Ray on an i3 computer is all that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. By the way, the proposed blank Blu-ray disc spindle doesn't work in this recorder. They have a 16x write speed. The drive has a 6x write speed.
