Review on 🔌 Sabrent USB 3.0 Hub for iMac Slim Uni-Body (HB-IMCU) - 4-Port High-Speed Connectivity by Fred Novak

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works great, but a bit fiddly to install.

It works as advertised but WOW how cumbersome it is to hook up. It fits very snugly and took a few tries. It doesn't "snap" or anything like that, and you have to bend it a bit to get it in. Begin alignment at the port by inserting the prongs into the vent and then bending/rolling into the hole. USB connector and press (press harder than I expected). When I first plugged it in, it wasn't far enough to work. The second try worked, and when I took it out and put it back in, it worked too, so I just wasn't aggressive enough the first time. On the other hand, once deployed, it's quite durable. I still hold it when I insert/remove USB sticks, but that's just out of my own paranoia because it's actually pretty durable. Of course, you should only connect flash drives to this thing as it is non-powered and will not charge iPhone/iPad, DVD drives, hard drives, etc. Keep the other 3 connectors handy for those things. There's a small power jack on the back that theoretically delivers full power for 4 ports, but there's no indication of what specs you'll need other than a power adapter to fully power it, and I won't do that. Guess. For reference, I have a late 2014 27" iMac 5K Retina, but it's the same configuration as any 27" iMac since 2012. The important point is that if you have a 21" iMac, you can connect it to each of the 4 USB ports, on a 27" iMac you can only connect it to 1 or 4 due to the shape of the vents on the bottom (there is an explanation card). I use mine in an air conditioned office doing system administration work, so I'm not too concerned about the small amount of airflow it's blocking. It doesn't seem to affect the audio output much, if at all, at least the warning tones, but I use headphones to listen to music. I connected it to the USB port shown in the product photos (item 1). As for the build quality, everything is fine. I don't know how someone fell off the front panel, because to me it's not a separate part. When installed, it sits flush with the front of the iMac and looks pretty nice. Not exactly a perfect color/texture match, but pretty close.

Pros
  • Easy Install
Cons
