I bought this DVD recorder to copy many old family videos from VHS to DVD. Our home movies date back to 1988. After some tips from Toshiba customer service, I was able to successfully burn my old home videos to DVD with the recorder. Like some other users, I found that when following the dubbing instructions on a DVD, the recorder displayed a "forbidden" symbol in the form of a crossed out red circle. After trying different brands of DVDs, I called Toshiba. I got some very helpful advice from the first Toshiba customer service representative but I couldn't solve the problem. I called back and spoke to another agent who was able to help me resolve the recording issues. Both Toshiba customer service representatives were very knowledgeable and explained their advice perfectly. I am very satisfied with Toshiba's customer service. I am summarizing the tips below so that other people who are having voice recorder problems can try the following steps to solve their problems. Because old videocassettes may not play well if they have not been used for several years, fast forward the tape to the end and rewind the tape before attempting to copy. The recorder can refuse to copy a tape if it is not doing well.2. Remove the video cassette. Apparently Toshiba DVRs (both 610 and 620) can crash if a videocassette is inserted before the DVD.3. Press the DVD button and insert a blank DVD.4. Press the "Record Mode" button (not "Record") and set the speed (I'm using SP).5. Press the "Setting" button and select "Record". Choose overwrite mode. Choose VCR > DVD.6. Press the VCR button and insert a video cassette. Press "Play" and then "Pause" (not "Stop") just before you want to start copying.7. Click the Duplicate button. Click Stop when you want to stop overwriting. You can then insert another videotape to dub onto the same DVD until it's full.8. You can add titles to a DVD by using the "Top Menu" button, select the part you want to title and click "Edit" and "Edit Title".9. After adding titles, you need to finalize the DVD by clicking the "Settings" button, selecting "DVD Menu" and then "Finish" (this may take a few minutes). You can then play the disc on another computer. I was able to play finalized discs on my Sony DVD player. I hope this helps others who are having trouble with these machines. I'm very happy to be able to make digital copies of my old home videos.
