I never like giving bad reviews, but when a product doesn't do the one job it was designed to do, I think that's appropriate. For context, I'm using a 500GB WD Black SN750. , which should be one of the most optimal drives to use since it is housed in the EKWB's own heatsink. However, the adapter came with a slightly crooked USB connector and the Lotes M.2 connector was frayed. Not a very good first sign. I ran into a problem I've never encountered before: it seems very difficult for the adapter to act as an intermediary between the drive and the system as a whole. Worse, even this dysfunction is fickle. It can take 2 to 10 minutes to connect the drive and read it in explorer. In many cases, the default drive name is automatically set to "Local Volume". Assuming the problem is with the drive itself, I've spent many tens of minutes slowly and quickly reformatting the drive, cleaning the drive, optimizing the drive, etc. Using alternative methods via diskpart, powershell, cmd, this doesn't seem to work case to be stick. I even cleaned the drive with the government's standard data cleaning tool. I can only conclude that the adapter device is defective. I assume it has something to do with the controller or some other data dependent component. First, this thing heats up a lot an SSD with a heavy built-in heatsink. Hotter than I've ever seen. It hurts, my hands are hot. And then I don't write anything about it, I just wait for it to be accessed. After agonizingly waiting for the drive to appear with the drive letter and label I actually assigned it, everything *usually* works. normally, and the write speed is pretty decent. Not as quick as I expected, but decent. Even though the system tries to read it, file explorer often freezes whenever I ever select a disk object and any third party application/program related to disk reading or mounting just won't open until that system has access to the hard drive. I often can't even complete the task from the task manager. I often have to pull the drive out of the port. This immediately unblocks frozen applications. I have to admit that this drive was previously encrypted, but I've dealt with encrypted drives before. I was able to access it easily with the encryption key. Erasing and reformatting all existing data from there isn't rocket science. Accessing a previously encrypted hard drive was faster than this. If anyone can help me prove that this issue is my fault and not the adapter's fault, please let me know on Steam @id/henchmanic. I would like to update this review to reflect the outcome.
