I have used this tool to successfully remove 6 old compression check valves which must be over 15 years old. It has metric threads but works seamlessly with standard US fittings. It screwed in very well, with plenty of turns, just enough to secure for tip removal. Unscrew it from the side pullers that just get in the way. You only need the center piece. For work with a small gap upstream of the valve, purchase an M10-1.5 x 45mm metric hex head bolt from a hardware store to replace the center handle and turn it from the side with a wrench. You can also use a hex bolt and wrench to get more leverage to pull out the compression ring, which requires a lot of torque to turn the center bolt. This tool should be priced around $11 on both Revain and Home Depot. Check before you buy.
