The intelligent Mario Kart game features familiar characters from Nintendo games for fun races. Several racetracks, each consisting of four thematically different racetracks, provide plenty of challenges. Some themes include: racing on regular (but not elliptical) circuits; Run through the gold mine (be careful not to fall off the rails); descent from a snowy mountain (beware of snowboarders); racing through the countryside (beware of the dairy cows roaming the dirt road); racing on the frozen tundra (beware of giant penguins); volcano races (you guessed it, watch out for the lava!); Race along the beach, through narrow city streets, along moonlit highways. They even run through the mall. The hardest (for me) is the track called Rainbow Road, where you hurtle through a spiraling rainbow in space with no side rails. If you slip off the track, you become a meteor that flies toward the ground. The goal is clear - to win the race. The player competes against twelve riders, with each character driving different carts or motorcycles. Throughout the game, each racer collects various items to gain an advantage or sabotage the competition. These items range from turtle shells to banana peels. The game allows up to four players to race simultaneously. My daughter and I compete (she usually wins) and the TV screen is split - her perspective is from above, mine is from below. I can't imagine playing with 4 players and splitting the screen into quarters. The game is best suited for single players and for two players. Players choose from a variety of vehicles, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Each has a description with graphical representations of speed, acceleration, drift, handling, etc. Successful players will unlock new game levels, new carts and bikes, and new characters. You can even unlock your own Mii, which is a full blown comedy to see you take on Donkey Kong and Mario. Much luck!
