The included software is a joke! Otherwise OK (if you spend hours setting up alternative software)

IF you are not computer savvy, DO NOT BUY! The supplied computer software Honestech TVR 2.5 should work with all new Windows versions. This is terrible software for these new operating systems that has given me many problems, the most annoying of which was that it randomly deletes files during recording (e.g. after a 3 hour recording of a VHS video it just saves, for example the last 20 minutes when you're done) To solve these problems, I searched the internet for a suitable alternative and found OBS, Open Broadcaster Software (free). I personally think OBS Studio is the best (at the time of writing OBS Studio 0.15.2). I spent a few hours experimenting and trying different settings since the software's basic purpose is to stream your games online. I wanted to keep my VHS conversions with no quality loss and what a nightmare it turned out to be. TIPS if you use OBS to convert VHS or video with low quality loss: - Set "Rate Control" to CFR. , (Not CBR, all you get is compression artifacts and choppy video) - Ideally, the CFR setting should be set to "0" if you want 0 quality loss, but your file will end up being huge (more than 50 GB/hour) - I found a CFR setting of around 12 suited my needs. I end up with a large file (10-20 Gb/h) but I won't lose much sleep if the VHS gets destroyed after burning as it saves the recording almost perfectly. - Set the file format to .flv (if it is set to .mp4 and the software or computer crashes in the middle, the recorded file will be completely unusable). more advanced than OBS but too complex for my needs.
