Simple putty in a deodorant applicator - needs smoothing out

I drilled about 15 holes in the ceiling trying to find a bobby pin. It seemed like a great solution. The idea is great, but I had the same results as with regular putty. The product did not become perfectly smooth to fill the holes. I had to mash tons of product with my finger to fill the hole and it was a bit messy because I wasn't prepared with a scraper like I should have been. So it got lumpy and I ended up having to get a scraper to smooth it out. It's just putty in a deodorant applicator. Nice concept and I see it as potentially useful. But you still have to be willing to iron it out.
