These are "rules for machinists", ie they measure from the top. One end is rounded with a hanging hole. The markings are clear and appear to have been etched and then inked, so the markings should remain. Check them carefully to make sure the square end is cut straight and that the ends line up with the marks. Otherwise your measurements will be wrong.
