Not quite the same shoes as before

I have been buying New Balance MX-001 (MX608, MX623) durable shoes for many years. Probably a few times a year or so for the last 15+ years. In the past they fit me better, offered more support (flat feet) and lasted better than any other athletic shoe I've bought (Nike, Adidas, etc.). Plus, the non-marking outsole is great for boat decks (your boating buddies won't get upset and hand you a cleaning bucket!). In particular, I found that the heel pocket is a bit wider than before so there is very little heel lift when walking. That's probably my biggest concern right now. There's also less arch support than older models, although with custom orthotics this isn't as important to me. In terms of quality, you can see some obvious cost-cutting measures - an "N" on each side. there is no longer any embroidery on the shoes, just a plastic/rubber molded part that is glued or welded onto the upper. The heel loop is no longer sewn to the shaft, but simply sewn onto the outside of the shaft. It's too early to talk about durability - I'm hoping the outsole is better than the V2 where the outermost (bottom) layer detached from the midsole after just a few months of use. The tongue sticker is better - the V2 had a 1.5" wide and 1/2" high strip sewn with tabs on the left and right ends (1/2" size) that easily attaches to the tongue when lacing up the shoe - and let it go. The V3 has a 1.5" high and 1" wide label sewn on both the bottom and top of the tongue - it's less likely to snag and feels more secure.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • For a long time
