Hard plastic boxes. The lids are well built and thick. They seal food with snaps on each end. The pump is charged via the USB cable/plug. The ring at the top of the pump turns red when it needs to be charged. The ring will then turn green when charging is complete. When you place the pump on one of the reservoirs and press the ring, it will change color from green to red and back again until the air is pumped out of the reservoir, and then it will turn off automatically. The light in the ring then goes out until the next use. The containers can be washed in the dishwasher. This is a very good product and the rechargeable pump is much easier to use than the hand pump. You'll be surprised how long your food will last in the fridge with it.
