The Sangean K-200 is so easy to use that I didn't refer to the manual for my first test. Time set, presets set, cable antenna connected and done. I haven't read anything about "mood light" or what you might call a night light. What amazes me about the K-200's marketing and design is that it wants to be two things in one: a kitchen radio. and clock radio by the bed. Does this hybrid compromise one function over another? Overall I would say no. The features don't conflict in any major way, except for maybe one thing: the presets at the top might not make it easy to switch bedside in the dark, unless your bed is a few inches higher than the bedside radio. The guide explains how to press the lightbulb icon to adjust the amount of light the display shows in different hues, as well as a "script LED" or mood indicator for "better hearing". SoundSangeans don't have a flashy sound. At best, their speakers sound warm. At worst, they're too bass-heavy, to the point of muddy, like the Sangean PR-D5 and LB-100 and U3. I think they struck a good balance with the K-200. It's not as bright as we'd like, but it's warm and not as muted as the LB-100 or PR-D5. FM reception is still very sensitive. The KPCC 89.3 sounds loud and clear without even raising the wire antenna. The weakest station, 88.9, needed a wire antenna extension to get rid of static electricity. All my other stations are receiving clearly: KCRW, KJAZZ and KROQ.AM. Reception. Good news: no background noise at 640, 570, 710 and 790. Unfortunately 830 is a bin. To be honest ALL my radios have issues with the 830. The PR-D5's wide filter actually makes it louder than the K-200. And my PR-D7 that I sold was too loud in AM. Finally, my Sangean WR-2 makes too much background noise in AM. Therefore, for AM K-200 is the most attractive. Design and Functionality As I said, I opened the box (filmed an unboxing video but couldn't get the Sony Bloggie onto my computer; a software download may be required) and set it up with no manual. The top is smooth, like modern ovens that don't have heating coils on the outside for easy cleaning. There are a couple of bells and whistles I can't imagine: an egg timer, a voice recorder. I just wanted a decent radio with a small footprint and without a long telescopic antenna, as my little ones like to break those antennas in half. Updates are coming soon of course. Update: After 6 weeks I'm noticing distortion on the AM dial at any volume higher than low levels. I think this is the result of too much bass in the speaker. So at least one star has to be deducted.
