Revainrating 5 out of 5

works after updates

Overall I am happy with the purchase. It worked for me the second time after the firmware update. The drive is quite large and also a bit noisy. it still deserves 5 stars. I am using XP on a Thinkpad t41 with a PCMCIA 1394 card. The first DVD was a cup holder. Nero recorded the video but didn't burn the DVD. The DVD looked like it was partially burned. Then I updated the firmware from sony.storageupdate.com. I also removed the sound DLA and utilities that were associated with IBM. I have also tried another brand of DVD (imation) which I burn to PCMCIA1394 from a PVR on the network via an ADVC100 (bought from Amazon). It took about 20 minutes to record the 50 minute show on 4x. I also record onto a Western Digital USB hard drive. Nero Assistant is intuitive, but I haven't had a chance to explore it in detail. I have yet to visit the website for updates, but what comes on the installation CD seems to be working for me. I've tried shareware programs in the past with no success, so I'm glad I have a way to transfer videos from camcorder and PVR to DVD. someday i will also migrate my old vhs and hi-8.
