Attention Mac users!

This product does not work with Sony software (Toast 6 Lite). You need to buy Toast 6 Titanium which will cost you another $99. Once you have Toast 6 it will work just fine, but be careful what type of DVD-R you use. It works well with dual layer Fuji and Imation (probably Verbatim as well), but doesn't recognize Memorex. May 3, 2006 DVD-R Company UPDATE, it's more about the quality of the DVDs themselves. Funny how I gave away my cheap Memorex and Fuji DVDs to a friend and they work great on…

Excellent Engine - Burns well - VERY loud and not very fast

This engine works great. It's plug and play so it was installed and up and running in seconds. The drive is very noisy when running at full speed. And although it reads very quickly, it writes a little slowly. I've bought several brands of DVD+/-R discs, some claiming to have 8x and 16x write speeds, but the drive doesn't seem to be using those speeds. Still, it's definitely faster than the internal DVD burner on my Toshiba laptop. It's just not super fast. But top quality. No problems with it…

Owned since purchase, still running 2019

Just pulled out of the closet and dusted. One of the labels shows the date of manufacture - January 2005. I hooked it up to my 2019 updated MacBook Pro and burned a few CDs from iTunes and they all played fine in several of my cars when I tested them. None of my computers have an optical drive anymore, but this old Sony could burn CDs for a car I recently bought with an old sat nav and no extra input. It should be noted that my MacBook did not require drivers for this CD. burner to work. I just

We have bought it for a long time and it does not disappoint

We have been using this external recorder for 6 years now (purchased in 2005) and it still works great. Now that hard disk media is obsolete, we have used this hard disk many times to install operating system on different computers without removable media. As before, any machine will recognize the drive without additional software. We are looking for a new (homemade) PC and looked for internal DVD burners but decided not to buy any at all as we will only be using this drive to install the…

Software issue to consider

The machine works great, looks good; But people should be aware of a small, big issue with the software. For example, if you have an internal CD-RW drive and use Nero for it, this Sony DVD burner comes with its own version of Nero that will erase your previous version. And this version of Nero refuses to recognize any non-Sony capture device. That's the end of your internal CD-RW drive! I bought this Sony for the office to carry from car to car when needed but this terrible feature means I…

works after updates

Overall I am happy with the purchase. It worked for me the second time after the firmware update. The drive is quite large and also a bit noisy. it still deserves 5 stars. I am using XP on a Thinkpad t41 with a PCMCIA 1394 card. The first DVD was a cup holder. Nero recorded the video but didn't burn the DVD. The DVD looked like it was partially burned. Then I updated the firmware from sony.storageupdate.com. I also removed the sound DLA and utilities that were associated with IBM. I have also…

Easy to install and works great

Plus: Windows XP recognizes it. All you have to do is plug it in. I already had the Roxio software installed and it recognized it as a drive, so I didn't install the software that came with it. I burned the CD in about 5 minutes after opening the box. What a joy. It comes with a power cord, a USB cable, and a FireWire cable. You should get the DVD+R package, which is the fastest format it will burn. I haven't updated the firmware to make other formats run faster, so I don't know if it was…

Solid product and BIOS have been updated.

Paul (review below) did such a great job I have little to add. First of all, I would like to add that my initial experience with this DVD burner exceeded my expectations. The Nero software they provide is excellent; The DVD recorder is a joy to use. And FAST too. I would like to point out that Sony has two BIOS updates that increase the DVD-R burning speed from 8x to 12x. There are other achievements too. And updating the BIOS is so easy. (.) There are two updates. An update (says it's for the…
