Let's hope the second time is charming since the first one we received was flawed in both design and function. The photos show this first one. The threads were twisted in the pole and the lights flickered eerily. I just compiled version number two. So far it looks much more promising. I have building suggestions that might help. First I would suggest a pair of nitrile gloves to help with assembly. The bar is slippery and you have to hold it to tightly rotate the bar segments. Second, after unpacking the item, I would suggest plugging it in and testing all three bulbs together in their sockets before proceeding to assemble the entire item. If they don't work or if they start to flicker, you save yourself the hassle of assembling them. As for assembly, the guide suggested starting from the basics, which is what I did the first time. From the beginning I had problems with the threads not being lined up correctly. I tried twisting the sections tighter thinking I could overcome the slant, but not only could I not, I couldn't unscrew it from the base because the screw had come loose from the base and not the rod, which came loose from the screw. Another issue is that there is a lot of extra cable in the bars that will eventually have to be pulled through the bottom of the bar. So it made sense for me to start at the top so I could thread the cord through each section. To screw the pole to the base I tried laying the pole on its side and wrapping the base around it to avoid the problem of the cord twisting around the pole. But the heavy stand made it clunky and unwieldy, so I'd still recommend screwing the assembled stand upright onto the stand rather than laying it on its side. Thread cleanly and carefully. If something goes wrong from the start, you won't be able to save it in the end. Minor downsides to the finished product (not even charmed) are that the shades are made of plastic, which feels a little cheap and flimsy, but I'll admit it works well. The included LED bulbs are a nice bonus if you don't have flickering ones (and I don't know if the bulb itself was the cause of the flickering or the bulb). In general, it will do its job and we were satisfied.
