I think I can sort out the pen complaints (see photo). I've been using them for many years. The top pin has an original long U shape. The pins were shortened, probably to save metal and money (middle photo). People complained that they didn't work, so they lengthened one end in the current version, now it's a J-shape (bottom photo). Love these curlers, they are compact for storage and travel, heat up quickly and work well. The only complaint is that there are 10 reels and 10 pegs, so if you lose a peg (which happens!) you're out of luck. I used to order new pens but it's not much more expensive to buy a new set of rollers and now I have a lot of pens.
