I've spent a lot of money on fountain pens in pursuit of the illusion that my drawing would improve with better tools. No tool will teach you how to draw, but there is no illusion that some tools are more practical, comfortable and dynamic than others. Finding a quill with all of these variables in the Goldilocks zone is extremely difficult - some people spend hundreds of dollars making custom quills and feeders, or create huge collections of mass-produced quills without satisfaction. Quick Gesture Sketching I needed a light and well-balanced pen that was ready to go every time I took it out. A special pen was needed that, like a pencil, can create thin contour lines and large areas of color. The feed needed to lay those lines with perfect consistency no matter how fast I was ironing. A large ink tank was required because drawing - especially when applying clay - uses much more ink than writing. And it has to be durable because I'm not interested in babysitting a pen. From the five star rating you can guess that this pen ticks all of the boxes above - at an unbelievable price. The accompanying gesture study was completed in minutes on cheap newsprint using Waterman's Serenity Blue ink. You can see that even when I fixed the tone on the bird's chest with quick, bold lines - even on this cheap greedy paper - there are no gaps in any of the strokes. The capacity was solved with large international standard cartridges. I can comfortably draw for over an hour on a single refill, and new cartridges can be swapped out quickly. Waterman and Pelikan offer larger cartridges, but they're not very economical, so I recommend buying a bottle of Noodler's and refilling them. To the uninitiated, $20 might seem like a lot. But for a diligent ink-loving artist who will work with this tool for many years, this is nothing. In fact, buying ink in bulk bottles can easily save you money over pens and markers in the long run. Buy yourself a new toy - you deserve it.
