For the safety of the fish and because the water is dirty, we prefer to keep our hands off the aquarium. I bought this set when setting up my pool and didn't think I would use it that often. We have a 10 gallon fresh water tank and use scissors to trim the leaves on the plants. A spatula is great for moving the substrate, and tweezers are great for removing dirt stuck in rocks. In principle, the tools do their job well. We dry our tools after each use and they don't rust.
